Whitbread plans to expand its Premier Inn brand by opening 900 new hotels by 2020 and will also extend its Costa coffee chain in the next phase of its strategy for organic growth.
The future targets mark the continuation of ongoing growth by the group. In its financial results for 2014 the group reports it opened 33 Premier Inn hotels, four restaurants and 219 Costa stores worldwide.
Alongside its development programme, over the past year the firm spent £100m on product improvement and maintenance, including refurbishing 12,700 rooms and installing air conditioning in a further 2,500 rooms.
Last November the group opened its first hub by Premier Inn compact city centre hotel, which earned a BREEAM Outstanding rating at design stage for its environmental credentials. The hotel concept has won positive guest feedback, says the group. It has a committed pipeline of 10 hotels in London and a further three in Edinburgh, with the next hotel expected to open in London later this year.
The Costa brand is also greening up, with the opening of a zero-energy coffee shop housed in a purpose-designed eco-pod in Telford earlier this year.
