M&S unveils green store refit

Marks and Spencer has completed the green makeover of its Newcastle store, which includes a 167 sq m green wall. The living wall is the most obvious feature of the eco-refit of the Northumberland Street store.

Other elements of the refurbishment include:

  • New energy efficient refrigerators and LED refrigerator lighting
  • Waste heat from the refrigeration system is redistributed to the food hall
  • Over-door air heaters form an air curtain, to keep heat in the food hall. Doors are also fitted with intelligent sensors
  • The green wall is irrigated by rainwater, which is harvested on the roof.

This is the first M&S store to receive the green makeover treatment.
